Audubon Associate Naturalist, have led this tour many times, through tornados, droughts, questionable restaurants, and, sadly, the advent of fracking, and every one of my friends who has participated over the years has raved about the experience and the birds (in fact, one member of our group was on his third or fourth trip, I lost count).

The experience was one a long time in the waiting ever since I skipped over the highlands of Chiapas with a flight from the Yucatan to Costa Rica so many years ago. Thanks to better protection from hunting, this fancy bird is tame and easy to see at many sites in Costa Rica. Endangered and awesome, it’s pretty easy to experience this big parrot in the Pacific lowlands of Costa Rica from Tarcoles north to near Nicaragua. No turkeys up in here, just a big wild and crazy Cracid! Black Guan.

It was an all around quality experience. This remarkable area is best know for its huge wall that was used for centuries to protect the city from invasion, but for me, the Conwy RSPB refuge was fantastic. Unfortunately, their numbers are beginning to dwindle rapidly, as farm lands eliminate their habitat.

This is a protected area that includes the Los Cusingos Bird refuge, where we were guided by Andres Chinchilla, a young man who as a child ran around the farm where his family worked, and was to become this incredible bird refuge. His years of experience in this area were quite obvious as we found 62 species in one morning.
