The very first thing we notice about this large member of the Galliformes is that there is a wild version and a domestic version, and although the two are rather different, they are both given the same species name, Meleagris gallopavo. This is not entirely unknown among domestic animals, but many domesticates have no living wild version.

It’s a unique bird, even its scientific name is wonderful, so it’s not surprising that Gerard Gorman, Woodpecker Expert Supreme, has written a book all about the species. I was surprised to learn that there are two Wryneck species in the Jynx genus: Eurasian Wryneck, Jynx torquilla, and Red-throated Wryneck, Jynx ruficollis.

A bit of rain caused a two-hour delay on the flight in and, on my way back to Europe, they couldn’t find the airplane (clue: big metal thing with wings). Our internet research showed that somebody in Pine County had all three ( Black, Brown-capped, and Gray-crowned ) Rosy Finches on the feeders in their garden. And now I did.

Last night I saw my second plover species of the year, a Common Ringed Plover. Smith is the Staff Scientist Emeritus with the Smithsonian’s Tropical Research Centre in Panama. The work was widely cited, followed up with an article in Scientific American and the research appeared (and I may be wrong still appears) in textbooks.

These images are a wonderful cross-section of Gould’s best work, pulling from books on Toucans, birds of Australia, Trogons, Europe, and Darwin’s Voyage of H.M.S. All of Elizabeth’s birds were drawn from skins, though the Birds of Europe images benefitted from her observations of real live birds.

But apparently, all the Anas -species ducks are overly amorous or at least indiscriminate. NORTH AMERICAN TEAL HYBRIDS Clearly at least two teal species take to each other. Researching this single hybrid revealed that teals are as liberal with their love as mallards! Consider the teals. What about the rest?

The title is a bit deceptive, for while photographs are a huge part of the book, it is grounded in the 239 species accounts written by woodpecker guru Gerard Gorman. Gorman, a Brit who now resides in Central Europe, is a naturalist and tour leader who specializes in Eastern Europe and woodpeckers.
