The Warbler Brewery – Skylight Double India Pale Ale

Despite its 8% strength, Skylight Double India Pale Ale is a wonderfully refreshing – if potent – summer beer in the hazy New England IPA style. But it does earn points for whimsy, depicting a warbler-ish bird with a pale eye-ring and dark mask peering into a nest with three little hop cones as “eggs”. Good birding and happy drinking!

I guessed that his mate was close by, incubating her eggs. In England clutches of 15 or 16 eggs are usual, but clutches of as many as 28 eggs, all laid by a single hen, have been recorded. Such big clutches are essential for survival, as there’s hardly a predator around that won’t eat an egg or chick given half a chance.

Birding Sepilok, Borneo (Part 1)

If the male’s color fades after the first egg, the female reacts by laying a smaller second egg – seemingly deciding that it is better to cut her losses as the male apparently is the avian equivalent of a deadbeat father. At Sepilok, it can be hard to avoid taking photos of some non-birds, such as primates.

The Latin species name mcclellandii refers to John McClelland (1805-1875), a British zoologist and geologist who – as you might expect for a British person – in 1835 was sent to north-eastern India to check if tea could be grown there ( source ). In one group, they added a blue egg to their nests.

Don’t Ignore the Barnacles – they’re Real Birds

This individual was photographed in India There’s one problem with this approach, as it can lead to birds being ignored. A pair did lay infertile eggs in Iceland in 2018, but that’s about the only record I can find). Here in Suffolk we now have impressive wintering flocks of Barnacle Geese, often numbering 1000 birds or more.
