Magpie Geese arrived in the Broome area and bred close to the main highway and have now moved off to deeper water. This has included Magpie Geese , Wandering Whistling Ducks and some very tiny Black-winged Stilt chicks. Black-winged Stilt chicks on the edge of the highway. Black-winged Stilt chick.

and a visit to Big Egg Marsh (one year bird!) I watched the swan for awhile, occasionally being distracted by Snow Geese flying over, a Northern Flicker calling from nearby, and other birdy distractions. Once I got my trip out to Breezy Point (four year birds!) done I headed over to Jamaica Bay.

Flock after flock of blackbirds, ducks, geese, raptors flapping their way north. The rising alarm calls of Clay-colored Thrushes and screams of kiskadees often reveal the presence of a Brown Jay or toucans in search of eggs and nestlings. It eventually warms up but in the meantime, it’s good birding anyways.

The first few years for female ducks and geese are kind of practice rounds. Sometimes females have eggs to lay but no nest and the eggs can end up anywhere from other duck and goose nests…there was even a case in Minnesota where a Canada Goose laid an egg in an Osprey nest and the raptors incubated and hatched it !

Magpie Geese were breeding close to the main highway south of Broome and so were the Whiskered Terns , White-winged Black Terns , Purple Swamphens , Comb-crested Jacanas , Wandering Whistling Ducks and Plumed Whistling Ducks. Lifers includes Gambel’s Quail and Neotropic Cormorant, but the real highlights were the morning fly-out of Sandhill Cranes and the evening fly-in of Snow Geese. For example, not much can beat the experience of seeing a Bald Eagle scare up thousands of Snow Geese at Sacramento NWR. Bosque del Apache NWR in New Mexico.

Aleutian Cackling Geese are another bird very familiar with the Pacific; they are the only species of goose that nest on Alaska’s remote Aleutian Islands. is on a boat in the Aleutian chain. However, their fortunes had once turned for the worst.

The Snow Geese at Big Egg Marsh were fun to photograph as they landed on the field on Saturday. Though some American Robins stay all winter there are many more around now and they are much more conspicuous. And, like this one, many are extremely cooperative as they focus on foraging. They won’t be around too much longer.

Here is her description of migrating Snow Geese: I’d seen snow geese at great distances offshore or far overhead, but here they are passing me by, low on the water, where the wind speed is lessened. Ahead on the water, I see roughly 200 tired snow geese settled together in a single, densely packed group.
