Springtime in Canada Geese Country

Normally, I don’t look forward to seeing the Canada Geese on the lake near my Florida home. The adults have been paired off for months, building nests in the grassy edges of the lake (except one pair, who nested in a wooden pail at the end of someone’s dock) and finally the adorable babies emerged from their cream-colored eggs.

Don’t Ignore the Barnacles – they’re Real Birds

Here in Suffolk we now have impressive wintering flocks of Barnacle Geese, often numbering 1000 birds or more. The purist birders take little interest in them, regarding them as no more interesting, or exciting, than the flocks of Canada Geese that have long been established in the county. It’s spectacular stuff.

Magpie Geese breeding near Broome

Early in the Wet Season we had noticed the arrival of unusually high numbers of Magpie Geese and they are a species that don’t always make it to the Broome area if it is not a wet year. It did seem highly probable that the Magpie Geese would breed in the area this year. Ten young Magpie Geese with parents.

With so much to look at, you wouldn’t think my eyes would be drawn to a pine cone nest on the ground, complete with a Canada Goose parent shielding her delicate eggs from the nearby antelope species. Masked Lapwings breeding at Derby airport

The open plains are now busy with young Magpie Geese and numerous other waterbirds and the Sharp-tailed Sandpipers are busy feeding up before migration. Masked Lapwings have been busy breeding for some months now and some may well be on their second clutch of eggs. Masked Lapwing nest with eggs and chicks.
