Early in the Wet Season we had noticed the arrival of unusually high numbers of Magpie Geese and they are a species that don’t always make it to the Broome area if it is not a wet year. It did seem highly probable that the Magpie Geese would breed in the area this year. Magpie Goose family-two adults.

On large islands shaded with multiple trees, a family of orangutans and another of gorillas lounged in the green grass. With so much to look at, you wouldn’t think my eyes would be drawn to a pine cone nest on the ground, complete with a Canada Goose parent shielding her delicate eggs from the nearby antelope species.

The open plains are now busy with young Magpie Geese and numerous other waterbirds and the Sharp-tailed Sandpipers are busy feeding up before migration. Masked Lapwings have been busy breeding for some months now and some may well be on their second clutch of eggs. Masked Lapwing nest with eggs and chicks.

Magpie Geese arrived in the Broome area and bred close to the main highway and have now moved off to deeper water. On several occasions recently we have had to stop on the highway to let families of birds go across from one wet side of the road to the other wet side of the road. Adult and Juvenile Black-winged Stilts.

Magpie Geese were breeding close to the main highway south of Broome and so were the Whiskered Terns , White-winged Black Terns , Purple Swamphens , Comb-crested Jacanas , Wandering Whistling Ducks and Plumed Whistling Ducks. Australian Painted Snipe nest with four eggs. Four eggs in the Australian Painted Snipe nest.

The first few years for female ducks and geese are kind of practice rounds. Sometimes females have eggs to lay but no nest and the eggs can end up anywhere from other duck and goose nests…there was even a case in Minnesota where a Canada Goose laid an egg in an Osprey nest and the raptors incubated and hatched it !

Regardless of the temperatures I got out and about both mornings on my own and in the afternoons with the family. The Snow Geese at Big Egg Marsh were fun to photograph as they landed on the field on Saturday. There were lots of birds around and my camera was in overdrive! They won’t be around too much longer.
