Sunday morning dawned clear and cool, perfect weather in which to find some owls. Sunrise found me in a car with Rich Kelly and Seth Ausubel, on our way to Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx where we would be joined by Bob Dieterich and Gene Herskovics for an owl prowl. For some reason, Pelham Bay Park has long attracted wintering owls and Great Horned Owls nest there and are year-round residents.

Black-thighed Grosbeak. On a recent Costa Rica trip, one of these was called out while an epic mixed flock was demolishing the forest around us. Seagull Steve, being a tropical birding noob, completely froze…his brain could not process this information. It was, as they say, a “brainbird” This cost him the bird, and he had to wait until 2013 before his Leicas collided with this enormous-billed behemoth.

This is a Green-barred Woodpecker , common and widespread throughout South America to the south of the Amazon River and to the east of the Andes. In the southern part of their range, they sport a golden yellow on breast and belly. This form is thought to be a different species and the name Golden-bellied Woodpecker has been adopted by some. The male wears the red malar with the female preferring the slimming qualities of black.

When I was a child, the Pileated Woodpecker was a bird that loomed large — both literally, as the biggest surviving woodpecker in the United States, and figuratively, in that it was a bird on that happy borderland between humdrum and mythical, between everyday and nonexistent. In Broome at the moment we are constantly hearing the dull descending sound of the Pheasant Coucal. It is breeding season and they are looking for mates! It is a very large bird of approximately 50-70cm (20-28 inches) that chooses to spend most of its time on the ground and when necessary it will fly, but invariably looks like it has not quite got the hang of it yet.

The giant petrels are aptly named, massive lumbering fulmarine petrels as large as small albatrosses that terrorise the Southern Ocean. There are two species, rather conservatively named the Southern Giant Petrel and, the star of today’s show, the Northern Giant Petrel. Northern Giant Petrel ( Macronectes halli ).
