Southern California is loaded with parrots. Many escapes and introductions have taken place over the years and some species have found the warm, dry climate to their liking. Quite a few species are well-established and breeding from San Diego to Los Angeles and beyond. White-tailed Antelope Squirrels at Joshua Tree National Park

10,000 Birds

While eating lunch with Daisy and her family at a picnic area in Joshua Tree National Park the other day a small chipmunk-looking creature ventured out of the rock formation we were eating next to. The cute little critter was clearly looking for a handout which we did not provide. Nonetheless, it stuck around, hoping perhaps that one of the four kids aged six and under would drop some of their lunch accidentally.

Spectacled Bears at Machu Picchu

10,000 Birds

Happy New Year everyone! In early December we had the privilege of filming the inaugural Peru Birding Rally Challenge , a six day, five night event where teams from around the world compete to see the most species of birds. A detailed post on this incredible rally is already overdue but in the meantime I felt the need to share a once-in-a-lifetime sighting of one of the scarcest mammals in South America.

Turkey Vultures Get No Respect!

10,000 Birds

The Turkey Vulture ( Cathartes aura ) is probably one of the most misunderstood birds in North America. Some people think they are ugly, but not I (click on photos for full sized images). Their odd looks serve very important purposes. The adult Turkey Vulture’s head and distal neck is reddish bare skin with blackish bristles, which not only helps keep their heads clean when partaking of a carrion meal, they use that featherless head to help regulate body temperature.

Sungei Buloh – Singapore’s Finest Wetlands

10,000 Birds

SINGAPORE, DECEMBER 2012 – Ask any birder where you should go birding in Singapore and the short list will always include Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve , this city-state’s finest wetlands. Winter can be particularly auspicious, since that’s when migratory shorebirds descend upon the area. Since I was in Singapore in winter, Sungei Buloh seemed like the best place to kick off my introduction to Southeast Asian avifauna.

New Utah Birders Site

10,000 Birds

The Utah Birders site is up and running and it is pretty darn nice. What will likely draw the most attention is that they have decided to include a “Rarity Database” with the following explanation: It is 2013 and there is no need for a committee to decide what sightings are relevant. Introducing the Utah Rare Birds Database, where ALL rare bird sightings are stored for you to interpret for yourself.

Starting the Year

10,000 Birds

In contrast to last year, when I began my year in tropical Cairns in Queensland, Australia, I began this year’s birding in my parent’s rural house in Cheshire in Northern England. Where Cairns was hot this place isn’t, but where Cairns was new Cheshire is familiar. It was particularly nice for the first bird to be one of my favourite birds here, a flock of Long-tailed T**s feeding on some peanuts.

Still the Same Hawk: A Review of a Book about Nature and New York by a Native New Yorker

10,000 Birds

My spark bird was the Red-tailed Hawk that lives next to Central Park, the one named Pale Male I’ve always been a little embarrassed about this. There have been three books written about Pale Male and 2 movies made about him, and saying that he was the bird that sparked my birding obsession makes me feel like I am living out an urban cliché. The truth is that I was.

Where Are You Birding This First Weekend of 2013?

10,000 Birds

Make the most of them! This weekend, Corey and I will both begin the cold, careful work of adding local birds to our burgeoning year lists. Many others, no doubt, will do the same.

Birds on Film

10,000 Birds

I haven’t been birding yet in 2013. Oh, I’ve gotten my first bird of the year ( European Starling – yay?) and a handful more ( Rock Pigeon , House Sparrow , and my first native bird, White-Throated Sparrow ), but for the most part I’ve been sticking to indoor pursuits here in chilly New York City. One of those indoor pursuits was movie-going; specifically, on Tuesday I saw West of Memphis.

Coyotes in Carbon Canyon

10,000 Birds

When staying with Daisy’s family in Yorba Linda, California, I often wake up early in the morning and take the short walk up to the southern end of Carbon Canyon Regional Park to do some birding. To say the habitat there is disturbed would be a serious understatement: from the giant dam which I assume is meant to stop any flooding or mudslides that might occur in the canyon to the planted grove of redwoods it seems like very little in the park came about naturally.

A Christmas Day list

10,000 Birds

Whenever possible we have used our Christmas Day to see how many bird species we can get in our local area and this year was no different. It is a great way to spend the day together, especially if work commitments have prevented birding trips together for a few weeks. We usually try and plan a route prior to the day with particular bird species in mind and also taking into account the tidal range for the day.

There were quite a few big years that took place in 2012. Here are the final results, so far as I was able to figure them out. Did I miss anyone? Please let me know in the comments. There were a couple of big years that I reported on back in June that I can’t find final results from and there were a couple of others that were happening that I never managed to find any details about at all.
