Birding northern Serbia, or a sudden bird tour

Eurasian Skylarks took flight in front of our wheels, and one Suslik (Ground Squirrel) quickly ran across our path, while a dozen European Bee-eaters adorned bare branches. noticed a Eurasian Stone-curlew , which I dipped and, as we were leaving, one male Red-footed Falcon waved us goodbye. Did I mention Great Bustards ?

Birding Deliblato Sands: What I have seen and what I haven’t

On the opposite side is a smallish falcon, obviously too short-tailed for a Common Kestrel, a Eurasian Hobby first comes to mind… but a male Red-footed Falcon on migration it turns out to be. Red-footed Falcon’s breeding range starts less than 50 mi north of here and I hope that some will choose to join a local rookery and stay.

Week 29: The birds of Crater Lake National Park

With our early morning arrival, we were greeted by several birds of prey, the first being a Golden Eagle. Looking out over the lake from one of the many view points as you travel the park, we spotted Peregrines Falcons, American Kestrels, and this young Coopers Hawk , as it flew right over our heads.

These are overgrown in steppe grasses and local sheep herders are subsidised by the authorities to bring their animals here to keep the grass short, prevent succession by bushes and manage the habitat for vulnerable Sousliks , or European ground squirrels. Yet, despite the grassland habitat looking good, the sheep numbers are low.
