Which means that the large country of Mexico boasts (according to one list) 127 endemic bird species, while the famous birders’ destination of Costa Rica has only 6. It doesn’t seem fair at all.

On May 23, I decided to go up to Lake Cuitzeo, in spite of the fact that the lake can seem much less interesting after our winter migrant ducks, waders and shorebirds have left. And it also turned out, to my great surprise, that not all those migratory ducks had left yet. I have seen two Godwit species at Lake Cuitzeo.

Certainly what I would consider to be an under birded area, eBird.com lists 232 species on 397 total check lists. On my last couple of visits, California Gulls, Ring-billed Gulls, Ruddy Ducks, Common Gallinule, Western Grebe, Eared Grebe and Pied-billed Grebes were on the water. One raft along had over 380 birds in it.

The more I learn about ducks, the more impressed I am with their blatant promiscuity. Mallards , of course, bring new meaning to the term dabbling duck , what with all those wild mallard hybrids and domestic cross-breeds running around. But apparently, all the Anas -species ducks are overly amorous or at least indiscriminate.

Based on the number of species recorded, it looks like we also had pretty good coverage. 744 Species. We recorded a very good percentage of bird species that were possible including typically tough ones like quail-doves, Sharpbill, Black-crowned Antpitta , and the cotingas. Species Missed.
