Leucistic Ruddy Duck Oxyura jamaicensis

What I am getting at here is that I have seen lots and lots of Ruddy Ducks at Jamaica Bay but never one that looked like this particular individual. She was essentially cream-colored, much lighter than the typical female Ruddy Duck. Anyway, enjoy the images and keep an eye out for odd ducks! Go check it out! Get yours today!

Birding Breezy Point

Breezy Point, the westernmost tip of the barrier islands that protect Long Island’s south shore, is also the southwestern most portion of Queens and one of my favorite locations to look for birds. Five Field Sparrows in February in Queens is unprecedented for me but that’s how many I counted in that one flock.

Hide at Mankwe Dam

The walkway proved very productive today; Three-banded Plover , African Snipe , African Jacana , and some White-faced Ducks were seen through the screen in the water to the left as I walked up. Pied Kingfishers hovered before plunging to catch small fish, Pied Crows circled overhead and Village Weavers teed themselves up on dead snags.

In 1974, Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge was established to protect the delta and its diversity of fish and wildlife habitats. These were my first Fox Sparrows of the year. While most major estuaries in Washington state have been filled, dredged, or developed, Nisqually River’s has been set aside for wildlife.
