The highlight of that day was a visit from some dolphins. I got one or two myself, as the dolphins made it pretty easy for us. A small group of Gray Ducks up at Mirror Lakes, Australasian Horned Grebe , Australian Coots , and some more Black Swans were found at Lake Dunst.

I had spent the morning on Navarre Beach, walking the pier looking for sea turtles and dolphins, then making my way down the beach. I was about 90% sure I had seen a group of Gray Kingbirds at the Emerald Coast Visitor’s Center on Okaloosa Island. Sometimes great birding days are not about all the birds you see.

There were Atlantic bottlenose dolphins frolicking in the water, and eagles perching in the pines! If you’re interested in birding coastal Georgia, the Ogeechee Audubon Society and Skidaway Audubon are your go-to groups. Easily the highlight of the trip, it was one of three cetacean species we would see for the day, the others being Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins and Common Dolphins. It was not easy considering that it was still dark. We tracked it down and had a great show of a Humpback Whale breaching repeatedly, one of two in the area.

This unexpected, fine year bird was followed up with dolphins, Black Terns , Brown Boobies , and a surprise Galapagos Shearwater scoped from shore! This area is where I have seen storm-petrels and Sooty Shearwater in the past, and is where we watched a small group of Galapagos Shearwaters fly in front of the boat on Sunday.

A wonderful highlight of the day, for me at least, came when a group of creative types showed up to film a “post-apocalyptic rap video” nearby. They came up to the platform a couple at a time to check out the view and we shared our optics and showed them dolphins offshore, an Osprey eating a fish, and variety of other cool sights.

Getting to the Poor Knights involves a day-trip out of the small fishing port of Tutukaka, and straight out of the harbour we had our first wildlife encounter, a pod of Bottlenose Dolphins that swam around the dive boat. The second dive site was under the Eastern Arch inside the main group.

Almost as soon as we were clear of the shore we encountered a pod of Short-nosed Common Dolphins and large flocks of Fluttering Shearwaters, Flesh-footed Shearwaters and Buller’s Shearwaters. During this study, all the pigeon predation was observed on one small island where the birds grouped to preen and drink. Or, it could just be some weird thing one group of catfish do.
