Birding Tengchong, Yunnan (again)

Sadly, the HBW states that the species is “almost extinct in some areas in China owing to hunting and trapping for the cagebird trade and taxidermy” The Maroon Oriole looks much more interesting, though my photos do not really do it full justice.

In order to offset the loss of the seal product market in Europe, Canada has made a deal with China. China as a whole still doesn't have a national conscience about these issues. I'm not surprised. Although 40 Chinese animal rights groups have protested, they don't really have any political or financial clout to change anything.

House-hunting, apparently. Very close to a village – these birds are much more shy in China … Green Bee-eater. Black Kite. These photos were actually taken right from my hotel room. No surcharge for the room despite being perfect for birders. Black-necked Stork. Black-rumped Flameback. Black-winged Kite. Brahminy Starling.

A few Barbets

T he Blue-throated Barbet (Xishuangbanna and Baihualing, Yunnan, China) is probably the barbet species that is the easiest to see in Southern China. Might have something to do with the fact that they were hunted here until quite recently).

Birding Hongbenghe, Yunnan

While it is listed as Least Concern, it is rare in China – the range map in the HBW barely touches Chinese territory. The Latin name “ chinensis ” is somewhat misleading as is much more common in Southeast Asia than in China – apparently, it was chosen in the mistaken belief that the type specimen had come from China.
