I didn’t realize how many new species I would see within the city itself! We had seen a chicken or two so far on our walk, but it was hilarious to see this much larger domestic bird sitting between doves and starlings. Given how far west I found myself, I was hoping for at least a handful of new birds.

Great Gray Owl taking the bait (photo by Nathalie Fortier) At the end of the experience, she posted her photographs clearly stating that the bird was baited, and leaving the mouse in most photos. And as Ron Dudley shows, it goes beyond live mice, as he documented a whole chicken being left out by someone to attract raptors.

On a trip to Suriname to find and film some of these spectacular species I was blown away by the birding. Suriname has approximately 735 recorded species, with many more to still be added to its total list. The surrounding grounds are a great introduction to some common, but nonetheless interesting, species.

The problem with that statement is it's not as if farmers are searching "the wild" for cows, pigs, chicken and fish, plucking them from their homes, and plopping them on a farm to live out their (shortened) lives prior to slaughter. I do not pass judgment on other species, whose motives I cannot comprehend. Besides, we have choices.

Views like this offer specialty niches for many high-altitude species. These White-tailed Ptarmigan are without a doubt one of the most sought-after species in Colorado. These small chickens are mountain-top specialities. This species is an athletic and patient one.

I even managed to shoot a video with hands trembling of excitement, probably a first of the species. Burrowing Owl Tai Haku liked Mike’s choice of a chicken in our original post but decided to do him one better. I have chronicled the experience on my blog. It was a mythical bird I didn’t ever expect to see.

Usually not one to chicken out, the worried and concerned looks on their faces told me not to ignore the advice. My hosts could confidently tick off the species on their life list. We got at least three sub-species but the highlight was a Wilson’s Snipe we flushed. Instead, we should head back to civilisation.

Baby ducks and chickens s are the mensches of the bird world; they don’t spend all that time sitting there uselessly and constantly demanding attention. In mammal species where there is an overproduction of offspring, it is not uncommon for one of the offspring to be underfed so it dies. Some birds do this a little.

The lagoon outside offered other experiences too. They strolled around like fierce chickens, too young to know any better. My photographs are my field notes and I spend most of my time learning behaviour and sitting with certain species. I was transfixed. I felt so lucky to watch generations of hawks emerge from that park.

The food was better than decent, which exceeds our experience of Panamanian cuisine at most other locations. In fact, we saw two species of monkey, our only sloths, lots of coatis, and my rarest ever mammal sighting—a Jaguarundi —right on site. Chicken actually has just as much cholesterol as beef (about 100 milligrams of cholesterol in a 4-ounce serving) and almost as much fat. Researchers have also learned that the cancer-causing chemicals that form in beef as it cooks also tend to form in chicken.

It was a heart-pounding scene straight out of Jurassic Park, an odd experience for a laid-back pursuit like birding. This bird represented only the second documented record of this species in Florida. This may sound mundane, but my Best Bird of the Year is a species we all know quite well in one form or another.
