A mining company is fighting the widow of Steve Irwin over the use of some leased land. The mining company says she only wants the land to expand her cattle operations. She claims that mining it will damage plants and animals. Looks like a long and nasty fight ahead.

One of the things I do to earn a living is bird surveys, some for the federal government, some for private companies that want to assess an area for construction (like a wind turbine). Cattle wandered this pasture along with me (one cow even attempted to taste my carbon fiber tripod). It’s a good strategy for Bobolinks to have.

Until recently the cattle that grazed here were tethered, but they are now allowed to range freely, and by doing so they have opened up the marsh considerably, creating fine habitat. Flying in company with a Ringed Plover, it settled briefly, before continuing its migration. The marshes were looking as good as I have ever seen them.

We got particularly great looks at Guira Cuckoo at Pousada Piuval, a resort that is also a cattle ranch; they were active all day, even after many of the birds that gathered in the early morning dispersed, often whistling loudly from the fence posts.

My company has an office in Monterrey so my trip wasn’t the first time to this industrial city, nor will it be the last. The entertainment consisted of a group of 8 Grasshopper Sparrows and Cattle Egret attending to a small herd of – wait for it – cattle. Both the taste and the view were mouthwatering.

Companies selling washing powder might consider using the White-rumped Munia as a nice example for textiles washed with a competitive product: “You call this white?” Somehow I did not think Cattle Egrets would eat dragonflies (shouldn’t they eat beef, at least judging from their name?) but they do.
