Don’t Ignore the Barnacles – they’re Real Birds

Here in Suffolk we now have impressive wintering flocks of Barnacle Geese, often numbering 1000 birds or more. The purist birders take little interest in them, regarding them as no more interesting, or exciting, than the flocks of Canada Geese that have long been established in the county. It’s spectacular stuff.

Birding Southeastern Washington (McNary NWR)

As the image shows, it is an island of protected habitat in a sea of urban sprawl and agriculture. In April, when I recently visited, there are huge flocks of Snow Geese , with the occasional smaller groups of Canada Goose , Cacking Goose , and Greater White-Fronted Goose. What is the State Bird of Hawaii?

Nenes are attractive geese, though they were named for their soft calls rather than their looks. They probably evolved from the Canada Goose, and today sport black faces, white necks, and grayish bodies. Unlike other geese, Nenes prefer walking to swimming. Still, these geese face significant population threats.

Birding Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge

But if you want herons and ducks and shorebirds and geese and egrets and swans and rails the best bet is the famed Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge along State Route 2 in Oak Harbor, Ohio. While at the 2011 Midwest Birding Symposium I made two visits to the refuge, once at dawn and once early in the afternoon.

Week four: We wrap up our stay in the US.

In 1974, Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge was established to protect the delta and its diversity of fish and wildlife habitats. This cold weather and snow does not seem to have much effect on the huge number of ducks and geese, but the smaller song birds, all seem to wake up much later in the days, and only after it has warmed up a bit.

Though they seem to be learning from other geese and often feed on plain old grass like a Canada Goose.) But first one and then a second Brant seemed to have no problem figuring out how to eat it, even managing to peel it back further to get at the sweet fruit protected by the peel.
