It is a bird of the Pacific coast of North and South America, breeding in western Mexico and southern California. In the winter it is found across a vast swath of the Pacific coast of South America. I had, after all, seen quite a few just a couple of weeks ago in southern California.

Recently a Fork-tailed Flycatcher was reported from a park in San Francisco, a long ways away from its home in Central and South America. Whydahs have been known further south in California for a number of years, and have (unsurprisingly) also been misidentified for Fork-tailed Flycatcher down there.

The Clark’s Grebe was split from the Western Grebe in 1985; our grebes here are Clark’s, but I have seen Westerns in southern California.

We did however see a Yellow-rumped Warbler at Elephant Butte Lake, New Mexico on 16th November 1989 and a Townsend’s Warbler at Big Sur, California on 3rd December 1989. We spent almost 4 months crossing the USA and had an amazing time, although it was not the right time of year for Wood-Warblers.
