Avocets, Black-necked Stilts , and Spotted Sandpipers breed at the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve. Well, they weren’t so much of a flock as they were a group of birds all following their own foraging strategy in the same area. Later in the season more species show up. Horned Larks breed widely over North America, including up here in the High Arctic. They are fed by one or both parents, even after they’ve fledged and left the nest.

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. The African Spoonbill is one of the six global spoonbill species, and the main African one (there are also some Eurasian Spoonbills in Africa).

Though these plovers are common on the North Norfolk coast, their nearest breeding grounds are far to the north. A few do breed in Europe, on the extreme north-east of European Russia. The latter is half the size of the Grey, but with its stout beak and prominent eyes shows a distinct family likeness. A Ringed Plover.

The Little Grebe is of course a very common bird that can still surprise by its beauty in its breeding plumage. Swinhoe’s White-eye was just promoted to the rank of a full species in 2018. All three I have seen are males, which in this species are the subordinate sex. But it is all for science, I hear them say.
