Furthermore we have another very special stork-like bird, the regal Shoebill , previously known as the Whale-headed Stork but now placed in its own family. It is also related to Wood Stork of the Americas and Milky Stork of Asia.

Which these days involves a frenzy to breed and raise a brood. He told me where he’d found them, and we hung up and I went back to my card game. This is the 3rd year for these most northerly known breeding pair of loons. In the last couple of weeks I’ve seen over 20 new species. Things happen quickly up here.

The boys knew what Owls looked like, they saw Screech Owls (and Barred and Great Horned Owls) at a local wildlife park, and we photographed Burrowing Owl families every year at Brian Piccolo Park. a baby bird of indeterminate species hatches while his mother is away from the nest. So, they knew that these were Real Owls.

They are part of a family of New World Quail which includes Gambel’s, Mountain, Scaled and Montezuma Quail, as well as the Northern Bobwhite. All New World Quail are highly gregarious, typically found in coveys or flocks except during breeding season. The family group pictured below has been visiting my yard recently.

Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. Initiating a hunting season on a large, charismatic species like a crane is no way to resuscitate hunting.

A few families have a small number of eggs in the clutches, like gulls or cormorants. Others, like the petrels and some of the auks, will lay a single egg per breeding attempt. The investment placed in each clutch bur seabirds is so great that only one breeding attempt can be seen to completion each year.

Each year Hog Island offers programs, taught by a stellar staff of naturalists and artists, to groups of all kinds (teenagers, adults, families). He then led a lively game of name-that-bird charades by flailing his arms in simulations of various wingbeats, timing his flights so as not to fall overboard during oceanic swells.

The Little Grebe is of course a very common bird that can still surprise by its beauty in its breeding plumage. Swinhoe’s White-eye was just promoted to the rank of a full species in 2018. Its feet indeed look hideous, whenever it does not manage to hide them with its tail. But it is all for science, I hear them say.
