Weird Geese

We share our experiences, good and bad. I assumed it to be some kind of domestic breed or an escapee and didn’t pay it much attention. It returned last year with a small flock of Canada Geese and then again this year with a much bigger flock, nearing 150, that contained more oddities. But what might its own kind be?

I can hardly begin to describe the surreal experience that unfolded before me.

The top-5 birds of 2018

Lesser White-fronted Geese, of course. I counted them very roughly, but I do have a lot of experience estimating flocks. They do not build nests, but occupy old nests of Rooks and breed colonially among them. With one Black Stork near them, some 80 LWfG were foraging in the distance, where the sun was just now clearing the mist.

Tawny Frogmouth nesting

They breed after rain events and this was exactly the situation once again. Most were similar to what we had seen in September, with the addition of Magpie Geese in the flooded long grass. It was nothing like the experience in September with literally hundreds of each species looking for water. Tawny Frogmouth nest with chick.
