While no one denies that LA has a host of other issues, it seems even the money already being allotted to animal control and animal services is being misused and as a result, we are in an animal shelter crisis. This should stop!

The other day, Minneapolis, Minnesota passed a feral cat ordinance. So I put together a “carnival” (of sorts) of Feral Cat Ordinances and Issues that samples current events across the US. From the Star Tribune : Feral cats win a round at Minneapolis City Hall. She said she has a cat that stays indoors — unwillingly.

It is quite common for several clutches of Pied Oystercatcher eggs to be laid during the breeding season and often within ten days of egg or chick loss. The wind was just too much and they sheltered together in the vegetation at the high tide mark. Pied Oystercatcher chick sheltering from the wind.

On the breeding grounds of the north, a small bird flies into the night, takes a bearing for the south, gains altitude and flies onward. Each day, the small bird then has to fly down and find a resting place, an area to feed and take shelter. Migrant birds make an incredibly perilous journey, twice per year. Flap, flap, glide.

Many factors need to be considered including breed, size and energy level. With the growing awareness of pet overpopulation more and more families are choosing to adopt a shelter dog and save a life. The shelter staff will do a behavior assessment to determine a dog’s adoptability soon after arriving at the shelter.

I think there are many disreputable breeders, I think they are increasing a bloated supply of pets, and I think there are many purebreds already available from shelters. My division director loves Norwegian Forest Cats. The woman still gets teary-eyed over a cat she lost 10 years ago to illness and these animals are like her children.
