I pass over the bridge on my way to class and a Song Sparrow is starting to defend a clump of bushes along the river. The Black-capped Chickadees have been adjusting their songs for weeks; now they are well-practiced and ready to get on with the business of breeding. Not only were there no Ravens to film (I was up at the airport watching a family of Ravens peeling tape off boxes of cargo left outside to load onto the south bound flight) but he found a pair of White-crowned Sparrows. Sibley Birds East covers “nearly 700” birds, up from 650, and Sibley Birds West covers “over 700,” which I’m assuming is more than the first edition count of 703 birds, if for no other reason than that taxonomic splits have give us Ridgeway’s Rail, Bell’s Sparrow and Sagebrush Sparrow. This means that loons are no longer first!

The longspurs proved more elusive: though we found both Horned Larks and Snow Buntings , to say nothing of an “Ipswich” Savannah Sparrow we failed to find a single longspur. She was lucky to get a breeding-plumaged male as a first look ( not like me ) which makes the moniker “harlequin” quite easy to understand.

Ferruginous Hawks breed in the grasslands of eastern Montana, but they are rare in the mountains and in winter, so this bird was certainly a surprise. We concluded the days by unsuccessfully scanning a golf course flock of Canada Geese for Cackling Geese , then returned to Missoula chilly but triumphant.

Outside of the breeding season a few birds may join together in a loose flock if the feeding is good. Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada. To describe the back as grey makes it sound very drab, but in good light it takes on a bluish hue. Informed literature bears out my experience that most birds are seen singly or in pairs.

These are the species that immediately come to my mind, and I probably missed some.
