Jeff Masson's new book didn't cause me to unravel, but I did learn a lot about our friends and coevolvers, Canis familiaris. This Masson book ( here are all of them) is for Benjy, who was supposed to be a service dog but who was, shall we say, less than enthusiastic about the career choice that was made for him.

In the right season, with a little luck, we often find it, and sometimes it perches high and long enough that we can admire its scimitar of a bill, its stern face pattern, and even the patch of rusty red on the undertail that gives the species its English and its scientific names. Perfect if part of your family (say, your spouse) want to read a book on the beach, while you take your camera and bins and look for plovers, reddish egrets, tricolored heron, and the occasional redknot, longbilled curlew… The view of the palm warblers feeding on the sand were also quite spectacular for me! I can’t get a good feel for them (I still prefer my book version). With ipods and iphones you can carry a lot more information than multiple books. Digital guides still have to reach a better caliber (in my opinion) to really make books obsolete however. While there are a few (nat geo, sibley, etc.)

Here are some observations: When reading a book about gorillas to/with a seven-year old, I was struck by the mixed messages the book sent. Here 's the book, and in the preview you can see that in the beginning when the gorilla being described is male he is referred to as "he." We do that with cats and dogs already, right?
