I caught glimpses of lots of fine, fine birds including a heroic Killdeer protecting a nest and my first Willow Flycatcher of the season. Anyway, the story is not quite how I remembered it, to be honest, but fitting enough to describe the almost claustrophobic birding experience in ever-shrinking Nanhui. Audubon Associate Naturalist, have led this tour many times, through tornados, droughts, questionable restaurants, and, sadly, the advent of fracking, and every one of my friends who has participated over the years has raved about the experience and the birds (in fact, one member of our group was on his third or fourth trip, I lost count).

The world record holder is the town of Kikinda, further north, with 700 birds in their town square which has recently become an officially protected owl habitat – a small, urban nature reserve. I observe them, but feel I still lack experience to tell with certainty the SEO from LEO in flight. Long-eared Owls are irresistibly cute.

Fortunately, forward-thinkers prevailed, the site is now protected as a Ramsar Wetland , and the hunting of Scarlet Ibis has become a social taboo. That this was only one of the spectacular birding experiences I had on the trip should clue you in to just how great a visit to Trinidad and Tobago is.

The adults move to flocks, there may be two or three of them, that hang out mostly far off shore in the larger part of the lake, abandoning their embayments or otherwise protected areas. One of Africa’s truly exhilarating experiences is watching and listening to a honking flock of these massive birds as they appear out of the early morning mists over a wetland, to land nearby and start their wing-flapping and jumping displays. Around 3,000 birds summered and bred at Birecik in the 1930’s but this declined to only 400 by 1982.

Third of all, the bird that was first seen on 30 October is, as of this blog posting, STILL THERE! But after repeated good experiences with birders as individuals, Mr Jordan has consented to allow the bird to be made public before it leaves. It made it through the rough winter and is still coming around to the feeders.
