After writing this last sentence, I looked up the species in the HBW and found the sentence “Song poorly documented” in the appropriate section, while with regard to calls, the description is that “call is a two-note raspy nasal ‘ryeeh-reh’”. In New Zealand, the Spotted Dove is an introduced species.

Leeds Castle’s most showy “blackbird” is the Jackdaw , Corvus monedula. Strangely, the Indian Peafowl is not mentioned on eBird’s Hotspot list which shows the 67 species that have been seen there. A few other remnants of the former collections might raise eyebrows in some circles.

That’s pretty amazing–Bolivia has more bird species than India! The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. The guide covers 1,433 species, the number of birds documented at the end of 2014, the cutoff point for the book.

The boat trip also offered some good looks at the Yellow-headed Blackbirds nesting along the shores. Like the breeding activity of many species this spring, the grebes were late, probably due to the unseasonable weather. Even if we couldn’t find time to raise the bins at a favorite patch, it only takes momentary glances into the sky and hearing chip notes from the trees to remind us that birds are on the move. High overhead, swallows are going over and in the fields, blackbirds move in undulating flocks. Migration is happening.

Lately, I have been waking up to the vocal antics of Laughing Falcon , the newly split Gray-cowled Wood-Rail , Grayish Saltator , Melodious Blackbird , and this beautiful male Blue Grosbeak that sings about a block away. Numbers were impressive, especially because that euphonia species isn’t the commonest of birds in Costa Rica.

I am only responding to my subjective impression of a single species’ appearance here; specifically, that of the Bronzed Cowbird. But when raised, they seem to have a sort of weird cape. In other words, they never raise their own young. In contrast, the Brown-headed Cowbird is a same-continent invasive species.

The fields near the Tiaozini mudflats look very much like a lunar landscape, but this does not seem to keep a number of species from breeding there, sometimes directly on dirt roads. The fourth species apparently breeding on these fields is Grey-headed Lapwing. The birding life. A somewhat older chick. Not this one.
