And while we’re working to ban captive boar hunts in New York why not ban all captive hunts? Real hunters don’t shoot animals raised in captivity or animals that are penned in, do they?

I didn’t expect to see any birds. During cold winters, the hunters retreated to the south, intent on quail and other game species. I am also from the Northeast, and seeing architecture that reminded me of New York and Connecticut and even my home state of Maine beneath southern Live Oaks and Magnolias felt a bit odd.

Thank you, goddess of birding luck and text group people).* My inner self felt stuck in an area between disbelief and total joy and the voices near me were echoing this state of mind: “Oh My God,” “I never thought I would see this bird,” “Look at that bill!” “How did that bird get here?”

Before you judge rabid deal hunters and conspicuous consumers too harshly, imagine how long you might wait on line for special deals on rare bird sightings? The Mourning Dove ( Zenaida macroura) is among the most abundant and widespread terrestrial birds endemic to North and Middle America. I won’t pick a fight with hunters, as long as they eat what they shoot and don’t use lead ammunition. However, I will pick a fight with the Rip Van Winkle Rod and Gun Club in Palenville, New York, which is sponsoring their fourth annual “Crow Down” March 29-30, 2014. I am not anti-hunting. In 2012 , the NFC revised some of its goals and set forth a new vision of waterfowl management that emphasized a core of hunter and conservationist supporters. Although I have no evidence, I suspect eBirders are broadly representative of birders generally, though they are likely younger than the overall birding community.

Well, it’s happened again – my first bird of the year was a crow. This year it was an American Crow ( Corvus brachyrhyncus ), though at home in Albany, New York, it’s just as likely to be – and has been in the past – a Fish Crow ( Corvus ossifragus ). Old Crow is named not for the bird, but for Dr. James C. or “uh-huh!”
