Sure, I indulged in a little hand-held action in the presence of a good bird, but the results were so middling that I never really saw it as something to spend a lot of time figuring out. It has a high, thin warble, but I usually only hear its high, soft tsii call.The Golden-browed Warbler can be found from Mexico down to Honduras, and like the Red Warbler , its warble is rarely heard, while its buzzy tsssi call is quite common. Most of the usual birds seem present, a frog or two call from a small wetland, and a few other expected animals are there too. We would marvel over cheery flocks of green and bright yellow Carolina Parakeets and then we would see them decline until there were just two, maybe one lonely bird, and then we would witness their forever absence.

Within 140 ac / 60 ha of Rancho Naturalista’s Reserve, there are 500 bird species – or 55% of the nation’s total! While I already visited Costa Rica once, I do not feel overly-confident with its birds. And Verbena attracts another specialty bird and a regional endemic (from Honduras to Panama), the Snowcap.

Rather than risk missing it, we decided to stop and see the amazing and bizarre bird as soon as possible, which was on the ride in to the lodge. Once the coaster stopped, we were out in a flash, and Robert wisely decided to let us find the bird for ourselves. It is hard to believe that such a bird even exists.

Birds are arriving in North America, flying from places far to the south. When birding in parks and woodlots of Ohio, Virginia, and Toronto, places with groves of maples and old craggy oaks, it can be hard to imagine that the Red-eyed Vireos of constant song were foraging for caterpillar larvae in rainforest just a few months earlier.

A couple of the biggest of bird families are restricted to the Americas. Purple and shining beryl adorn the males of this beautiful little bird.
