At last count, there are 25 species of birds named for U.S. But only two states have more than one bird named for them: Hawaii and California, with nine and seven extant and eponymous species, respectively. Good birding and happy drinking! One wonders how they ever find the time to make wine!

The addition of Hawaii eliminated any notion that the ABA Area is defined by geography or ecology and the inclusion of the territories of Washington D.C. This makes sense: why should political subdivisions within a nation apply to a national birding organization?

Many of these islands are part of the Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge and one of the most important areas is Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. Invasive species , particularly rodents, have long been a problem on the Hawaiian archipelago. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) wants to eradicate all of the mice on Midway.

Fish and Wildlife Service has taken two dozen critically endangered Millerbirds Acrocephalus familiaris from their home island of Nihoa in the northwestern Hawaii and moved them to Laysan about 650 miles to the north. But there was one trip I wasn’t going to miss, a midweek excursion by the Cumberland Bird Observers Club , the people to go out with in Sydney if you want birds. I often like to poke fun at how dangerous the wildlife of Australia is, as ever since the giant man-eating Haast’s Eagle went extinct the land life on New Zealand has been mostly harmless. Exactly which species came from that original break up is the subject of considerable debate.

Like Kapiti the island is an offshore refuge for many species extinct on the mainland, with a lot of the work being done by the voluntary Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi. You start hearing and catching glimpses of birds as soon as you land, particularly the fast moving Tui. One species I really hoped to find on the trip was the Kokako.

I was lucky enough to get a four month window into the lives of one species, the Great Frigatebird , Fregata minor , while working for the USFWS on French Frigate Shoals in the Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge.
