The Why of Ferrets

10,000 Birds

Sorry for banging on about black-footed ferrets, but here’s a bit on why this trip was so special to me: Forty years ago the black-footed ferret was a bit more like the Loch Ness Monster than it is today. By the time everyone came to an agreement that the black-footed ferret existed, it was already getting scarce.

What It Feels Like For a Ferret Watcher

10,000 Birds

As lovely as the Sage Grouse were, our trip had another primary mission — to see the amazing, highly endangered black-footed ferret. Ferret 492 — a black-footed ferret, Mustela nigripes — raises her head from a black-tailed prairie dog’s burrow, sniffs the April night. Not Ferret 492, though.

10,000 Birds

Thoughts for the Day

10,000 Birds

Last night I lay awake from 4 am til almost 5, worrying about the black-footed ferrets I met in Montana and the humans who had devoted their lives to helping them. Introducing the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge

10,000 Birds

Our small group spent a weekend at the Ferret Research Camp, a cluster of trailers tucked in the middle of a black-tailed prairie dog town and the site, as the name implies, of a black-footed ferret reintroduction program. Even off the refuge, the ranches are by necessity few and far between.
