Their migration is quite fast compared to many other larger birds – in one study , several birds flew 4000 km within 5–7 days while one individual even flew 5600 km non-stop. In 2007 I was working in a university building that was just begging for bird feeders. This was where I set up my bird feeders, just one at first, then expanding as everyone expressed delight in seeing the Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Downy Woodpeckers. There were no dead birds for weeks. I hoped it was an anomaly.

Countless flocks of frigid, sodden birds must be wondering whether they took a wrong turn somewhere. In between ice storms, I visited Brighton’s Brickyard Trail, a nice little walk that can be excellent for sparrows. What do you know, I spotted my FOY Swamp Sparrow in song, along with about a hundred Song Sparrows , also in song.

Corey could have chosen his first Pine Siskins of the year in New York, a Red-headed Woodpecker , a late Osprey , or a Vesper Sparrow as his Best Bird of the Weekend this weekend. But it was a common bird sitting in good light that he tapped for the honors, a Gray Catbird that cooperated wonderfully in Kissena Park.

Between work and rain, I saw nothing but mundane birds this weekend, and not even in good light. Corey, on the other hand, had a wonderful weekend of fall birding whether it was doing a survey at Edgemere Landfill in the rain and wind on Saturday morning or leading a New York City Audubon field trip at the Queens Botanical Garden on Sunday.
