Brown Pelicans , and the northernmost Brown Booby breeding colony on this side of the Pacific. And, the birds are awesome. Ringer Anhingas and darters , cormorants and shags , frigatebirds , gannets and boobies , pelicans , and the tropicbirds all share a characteristic found in no other living bird: Their feet are totipalmate.

One of the most camouflaged birds in Australia is the Tawny Frogmouth and we often hear them at night when we are camping in the bush, but the chance of seeing them is less likely. Tawny Frogmouths are actually more closely related to the Nightjar family. They breed after rain events and this was exactly the situation once again.

The floodwaters continue to recede across the plains near Broome and the bird-life continues to enjoy the environment. The whole area has been a breeding ground for many species and depending on the time of day you can expect a wide variety of species. There are plenty of grassy clumps that they can hide amongst and then bolt between.

Last year was the first year since we moved to Broome permanently at the end of 1999 that we encountered significant numbers of Magpie Geese to the area. The areas where the Magpie Geese have been breeding around Broome the past two years have been mostly inaccessible until recently due to the flooded land. Magpie Geese.

The most common member of the Grebe species around Broome is the Australasian Grebe- Tachybaptus novaehollandiae and it has taken advantage of our exceptionally good Wet Season early this year and has been breeding very successfully. During breeding season the Australasian Grebe has a very distinct pale yellow patch at the base of the bill.

On my recent short family vacation to Miami, I was granted a single day to get out and really bird like a madman. We immediately headed to an undisclosed location where Carlos had breeding Mangrove Cuckoos staked out. En route to our next stop we slowed down next to a park and spotted the now countable Egyptian Geese.

There are excellent birding opportunities along the highway throughout the year and the area still remains flooded from the rains over our Wet Season and it has been a breeding site for several species of birds. There are no bird hides, but we have our own favourite bird hide and ventured out late last Sunday afternoon.
