Humane Society Puts Pressure on South Carolina's Bear Baying

A declawed, defanged bear is chained to a stake as hunting dogs bark and snap, trying to force the bear to stand on its hind legs. The training exercise called bear baying is intended to make the bears easier to shoot in the wild and it's only allowed in South Carolina. State law on the issue is murky.

On the Edge.

This June my brother-in-law and I took off to Kangiq (Cape Crauford), the western edge of of the mouth of Admiralty Inlet to Lancaster Sound. The tracks of two young Polar Bear skirt a crack in the sea ice in Admiralty Inlet. Still, with that many bear you have to stay vigilant. A scant 24 hours to take it in.

Northern Bear dless Tyrannulets , adorable little flycatchers, rarely visit my garden. Arizona is a lovely state, and is home to many lovely people, including one of my brothers-in-law. But these are all year-round residents, and common, down here. But this one did. Tufted Flycatchers are easy. We just have better birds.
