The Gas Station Bird

10,000 Birds

This may seem like government agency hair-splitting, but the calls needed to be made not to the wildlife division of the wildlife agency, but to the exotic species division of the wildlife agency. The bird is a captive-bred Peregrine/Gyrfalcon hybrid owned by people with an Exotic Species Permit.

Grasshopper Buffet

10,000 Birds

Most often encountered near to the village bearing the same name, this abundant grasshopper ultimately sprouts large wings and forms swarms which can decimate crops. Naturally, I had to investigate. This species is distinctly South American and does not share the same trajectory as the Yellow-billed Cuckoos.

10,000 Birds

On the breeding grounds of the north, a small bird flies into the night, takes a bearing for the south, gains altitude and flies onward. The rails did indeed come to investigate but came up empty-beaked. Migrant birds make an incredibly perilous journey, twice per year. How’s that for an understatement of the obvious?

Golden Swamp Warbler

10,000 Birds

Take, for example, this pair of birds I found investigating a cavity in northern Chatham County this weekend. A pair were busy investigating a broken stump, though the real object of their interest, what I assume was an old cavity, happened to just be on the opposite side. This is not a bird for cubicle farms! Appropriate!
