Over Memorial Day weekend (23-25 May) my family and I spent the weekend along the Delaware shore enjoying the beaches, natural areas, and tourist traps that make visiting the shore such a delight. Blue Grosbeaks were common and clearly on breeding territory. There are few birds as stylish as a Green Heron.

That’s right, I, along with my family and some really good friends, was camping. Our campsite was gorgeous North Lake State Park in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York, where the air is crisp, the forests are largely intact, and the bears force you to be careful about leaving food out when you go to sleep. I like phoebes.

That fallacious family name seems to have encouraged all manner of knaves, dunderheads, and miscreants when time came to label species. North American warblers, on the other hand, often bear names of, at best, marginal utility. The first guide bearing the National Audubon Society imprint was Audubon Bird Guide; Eastern Land Birds , written by Richard Hooper Pough, and illustrated by Don Eckelberry. Using the icons to locate specific bird families takes a little getting used to, but if you do it often it works well as a finding tool.
