That fallacious family name seems to have encouraged all manner of knaves, dunderheads, and miscreants when time came to label species. North American warblers, on the other hand, often bear names of, at best, marginal utility. Appropriate appellations should respect the birds, not 19th century naturalists and their friends and family.

National Audubon Society Birds of North America: A Guide Review

The first guide bearing the National Audubon Society imprint was Audubon Bird Guide; Eastern Land Birds , written by Richard Hooper Pough, and illustrated by Don Eckelberry. Interestingly, Chestnut-collared Longspur does appear under its brand-new official name, Thick-billed Longspur, though the description underneath uses the old name.
