Loner, Drifter: More on the Hoary Bat

I cannot get the Hoary Bat out of my head. Hoary Bats roost in trees, not caves. So the Hoary Bat is migratory. The species ranges north well into Canada in the summer months, but in the winter they make for the southern coasts or down to Mexico. Shoot, it’s not working!

In Defense of Bad Photos

The Olive-sided Flycatcher breeds in Canada and the western United States, and winters mostly in northern South America. Of course, I can’t bat a thousand on the bad photo rankings. The Greater Pewee is guaranteed to turn up in our pine/oak forests here. Believe it or not, both images were greatly improved in post-processing.

There were opportunities to go to far flung places like the islands of the Pacific or the coast of Canada or the Yorkshire Dales… Anyway, as I was obsessed by Africa at the time, I leapt at the opportunity to go to Namibia to collect samples of bat DNA for a biogeography project. I think we caught perhaps three bats.

What turned out to be an epic journey began in Nova Scotia, one of Canada’s Atlantic provinces. Pilots ‘n Paws Canada stepped up to the plate and volunteered to fly the little birds to Quebec. Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it sometimes takes a “village” of rehabbers to save threatened wildlife.

But after the recent controversy that surrounded the renaming of the Gray Jay to Canada Jay , perhaps its best to leave these names be for now (and you can find Canada Jays in California and even Arizona, by the way).
