But the Mexican Ducks say otherwise. And I did, in fact, see the Great Horned Owl , however briefly, as it flew away from what is apparently its standard perch. But neither of us expected a cypress we were walking by to start shaking and release an adult Barn Owl , which then flew away from us as fast as it could.

Birding Tradition: the New Year’s Day List

My pre-breakfast list was wildfowl dominated, the 10 species I saw ranging from Black-necked Swans to the endemic Falkland Islands Flightless Steamer Duck. The latter are great bruisers of ducks, built like a small battle ship. With bulk like that, it’s no wonder that they gave up flying long ago.

Birding a flooded highway

It was our second trip out on this piece of highway this year and sadly the second deceased Barn Owl. Unfortunately we have only ever seen dead Barn Owls in the Broome area and one day it would be nice to see a bird hunting over the land. Grass Owls are also present in the area, but remain off our bird list.

I have been thinking about this for awhile after I saw some people online with things like a pet skunk and even someone with a barn owl. However, the same people with these ducks, owls, armadillos, skunks, raccoons, etc are always showing clips of them with their little guys and they are just so happy, the animal and the owner.

If you live near water, you can try some duck nesting tubes. I see them all over in marshes in Minnesota but I had never seen a duck use one. I didn’t think they were as agile as a wood duck, but apparently they can. But there are so many unique housing options out there and one even works well for urban yards.
