The Masked Lapwing does however have two subspecies nowadays and is the Vanellus novahollandiae in south-east Australia. The yellow wattles are larger as well, but there are hybrids between the two species with varying amounts of black plumage.

Except for one species: I have a clear childhood memory of seeing black swans. Conventional wisdom upholding the uniformly white coloration of the genus Cygnus persisted for many centuries after Juvenal, until 1697, when the Dutch captain Willem de Vlamingh made a startling discovery in Australia: black swans. The Australian Painted Snipe – Rostratula australis is one of the hardest shorebirds/waders to find in Australia and very little is known about them at all. Some suggest they are related to the Plains Wanderer of Australia. There are four species of seedsnipes (Thinocoridae) and all are endemic to the Neotropical region, including Patagonia and the Andean zone. From our experience the greatest risk is when the shorebirds take off in a panic flight and clip each other’s wings and several fall into the sea. There are two sub species of Red Knot here and the piersmai sub species is a much darker red colour than the rogersi sub species and easily identified in breeding plumage.
