It has been more than 5 years since I last went to Australia, and I was even less of a qualified bird photographer then than I am now. All photos were taken in Australia in December 2016 – locations included Brisbane and surroundings, Alice Springs, Ayers Rock, Melbourne, and the coast near Melbourne.

Pied Oystercatcher nesting

The main problem appears to be feral cats, but there is also predation from birds of prey and the parent Pied Oystercatchers do their utmost to protect their young. We are unsure of the exact predator, but there are cat prints in the area. Feral cat prints at nest site-eggs gone.

This offers a lot more protection than the exposed nest site. Feral cats are also a problem in Broome. There are dangers around the nest site and the sooner they could move the family away from the exposed nest site the better. The Pied Oystercatchers hide the chicks in the thick vegetation once they leave the nest site.

Autumn colours

In the north of Australia we also have changing colours, but it is not the foliage that changes. By collecting data and following individual birds it is possible to provide data to both governments and environmental groups to help protect the habitat both here and overseas into the future.
