This year we have continued to monitor the breeding of several pairs of Pied Oystercatchers along the coast in Broome from Gantheaume Point to Willie Creek on the south side. This species are long living and so the population appears to be sustainable at this stage despite the predation.

Gantheaume Point offers both food and protection for a young Pied Oystercatcher chick, which is very important when they are unable to fly. The Emu Dromaius novaehollandiae is Australia’s largest bird standing at up to 2 metres (6 foot 6 inches) tall. They will only breed if the conditions are good and the male will be responsible for nest building and incubating the 6-12 eggs for approximately 60 days. He will then rear the young Emu for up to 18 months.

They will be seeking protection where they can and they will return as soon as the rain eases. In the north of Australia we also have changing colours, but it is not the foliage that changes. The male Bar-tailed Godwit are the first to show us breeding plumage and then the Red Knot and Curlew Sandpipers have two beautiful reds-red wine rather than cranberry juice! Since discovering our first Pied Oystercatcher nest on Cable Beach in July 2000 we have observed the breeding of these local shorebirds along the coast between Gantheaume Point in the south and Willie Creek in the north, which is a distance of 23 kilometres. Pied Oystercatcher nest close to high tide and with added protection.

Soon we were out of the protected harbour and into choppier waters, and here I have to say I suffered for about two hours from the dreaded affliction known as sea-sickness. The final large petrel species is another gadfly petrel, albeit a much larger one than the Cook’s Petrel.

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. Couas and koels are both cuckoos, saw-wings are swallows and logrunners are an odd unique thing from Australia who’s only relative is the charmingly named Chowchilla). I’d never heard of them until 2005 when I saw some in the Botanical Gardens of Canberra in Australia. What, exactly, is a pardalote? A Spotted Pardalote !

Our first stop was Cable Beach to find the Pied Oystercatchers in their territory even though the breeding season is over. A short walk found us both species despite the tide being rather low. Our next plan was to head out of town because it was midday and we had 72 species within the town limit. Common Sandpiper.

It worked, and the translocated birds were soon breeding. Today the species is secure on a large number of islands and reserves. Both species had undergone massive declines since the arrival of humans and where in a perilous position in the 1970s. Both species were pushed to the brink but pulled back just in the nick of time.

Most threatened endemics are now restricted to protected areas, but I’ve passed a couple of Weka on a country road in Neslon and I saw my first Long-tailed Cuckoo flying across the main road out of Wellington. While there are birds you are likely to see on such a drive, it is possible to see even some rarities.
