Sure, this is normal occurrence across much of Europe and southwest Asia but this particular tale comes from out on the east end of New York’s Long Island, in the town of Medford, where this happened to an unsuspecting non-birder, Celeste Rovner.

Garganey in New York

On Sunday, 5 June, word of Jay McGowan finding a Gargeney at Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge in western New York State hit the listservs. Its a Eurasian bird, migrating from Africa and south Asia every spring. The long ride back to New York City was uneventful but much more upbeat than it was after the Gray Kingbird dip.

Eurasian Wryneck Jynx torquilla

Eurasian Wrynecks are found breeding across the temperate zones of Europe and Asia. They migrate to warmer climes in Africa and south Asia to winter. Until a month ago I had never seen the Eurasian Wryneck either, but the trip to Hungary took care of that gap on the life list easily.

Black Skimmers at Cupsogue Beach County Park

While the Black Skimmer is a Species of Least Concern , the African Skimmer is Near Threatened and the Indian Skimmer is Vulnerable , sad news for anyone who appreciates these magnificent birds, which is everyone.
