As the cadet tells the camera, “I’m relieved … but I’m kinda sad, too, I just got to know him,” a hawk enters, stage left, grabs the mouse, and exits, stage right. “No!” My heart goes out to the cadet (the hawk is probably awfully fond of him right now, too). Releasing any wild animal is essentially rolling the dice.

Somewhat time sensitive last night coming home these baby birds in a nest right by our porch got spooked by something and just sort of jumped out. My mom kept trying to put them back in the nest but they kept falling back out.

He found it in Gay Frazee , a skilled wildlife rehabber who runs Wildlife ER on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. She is one of only two rehabbers on a 70-mile peninsula right in the middle of the eastern flyway, a superhighway for migrating birds. He kept her supplied with minnows as he searched for help.

Flying in excess of 200 mph in a stoop, the Peregrine Falcon is considered to be the world’s fastest animal. This one was right next to the road, a location where they can usually be spotted at this refuge. I have been fortunate to get a visit from this beautiful raptor in the photography blind at Delevan NWR.

My friend Nina is an animal lover. She doesn’t use pesticides, she loves the local wildlife, and she does everything a good pet owner should do. I was tempted to go on Facebook with guns blazing, but right now I am forced to pick and choose the timing of my battles. All her pets are rescues. She keeps her cats inside.

One of the animal keepers brought her to me, and I put her in my clinic. On the other, she sounded like she might have a respiratory infection, I didn’t have the right drug on hand, and I was scared to death that I might go down in history as the killer of the birdie Methuselah.
