It was in a hole in our oaktree that we think a woodpecker made weeks ago. Im honored that all these animals choose our backyard to live but im very sad that so many of them dont make it. Is there anything I can do to protect these babies from predators when I spot them next time. We just noticed the owl in it yesterday.

And used the opportunity to send an open letter to the City Mayor, enquiring about his still-unfulfilled promise of this particular area finally becoming protected. Trusting my instinct that in this kind of weather I can easily show this animal, a few days later I came back with a TV crew and… bingo!

The Reva Situation

Driving slowly along the track towards the levee separating this area from the Danube backwaters, a largish marten-like animal once ran across the track. About the size of a hare, it is more clumsily jumping, than running… and that tail… It was the European Otter !

They look crap but presumably offer some protection for the chicks, though not from each other (see the murderous activities within the nests in my previous post ). Caspar Georg Carl Reinwardt and picus , which means woodpecker, with the ti that connects the two parts possibly also having some kind of meaning.

I wondered, last August, how animals endure it — the tiny ever-pumping lungs of hummingbirds, the lungs of bighorn sheep shouldering their way up mountains, they must get filled with smoke too, right? They receive no protection, and are often destroyed by salvage logging as quickly as possible.

I have been rescuing animals, both wild and domestic, since I was a child. If you love your cats so much, why don’t you protect them? It’s so much easier to delete a picture than to end the life of a mortally wounded cat-caught bird, like this Downy Woodpecker … who is alive, but not for long. It sickens me.
