Other species I can recognize are colloquially called crocodile bark tree, due to the bark pattern, and paper bark. For you and me, there are about 200 bird species, but for proper tourists, there seem to be only five species in the reserve: Bengal Tiger , Leopard , Sloth Bear , Indian Wild Dog (Dhole) and the Gaur.

forest buffalo: The African forest buffalo is a small subspecies of the African buffalo. Cape buffaloes weigh 425 to 870 kg (937 to 1,918 lb), whereas African forest buffaloes are much lighter, weighing in at 250 to 320 kg (550–705 lbs). Their eyesight is so acute that buffalos often graze at night.

We are entering the mixed colony of 11 species ( Grey , Squacco , Purple and Black-crowned Night Herons ; Great , Little and, recently, Cattle Egrets ; Eurasian Spoonbill (below) and Glossy Ibis ; Pygmy and Great Cormorant ). Out of some 4000 buffaloes still being kept in Greece, about 3000 are at this lake.

It would have been useful to have more information about the rest camps that define each route, but I understand that there is a fine line (maybe even a broad one) between writing an animal guide and a tourist guide.

The Latin species name of the Marsh Sandpiper is stagnatilis , which somehow I thought might hint at the thin, needle-sharp bill of the bird (I do not know how I got this idea, maybe the word stagnatilis sounds kind of sharp) but in reality, stagnatilis means “of or belonging to pools or ponds” (HBW).

Interestingly enough, a similar situation with the same animal would unfold many years later – with a crushingly similar outcome for me. The sandy forest yielded half-decent looks at several uncommon forest species such as this White-shouldered Tanager. Little did I know that it was much closer than I had assumed! Never saw it.

What better testament to Carl Akeley, the taxidermist who mounted that elephant and to whom the Hall of African Mammals is dedicated, than to say that he turned a vast, throbbing, stampeding, living animal into an edifice with a feeling so much like permanence that a pigeon could go to sleep there? Phoebe Snetsinger was an American birder who first passed the 8,000 species mark. It has all Big Five animals and a whole lot of other grumpy mammals. Looking left I saw a big, male buffalo behind the bush. He subsequently leaves for Peru and gets kidnapped and killed by Sendero Luminoso – the local brand of Maoists.
