Enter the woodpecker. To be specific, the Red-bellied , Hairy , and Downy Woodpeckers , along with the White-breasted Nuthatch. These birds may be the North American ash tree’s last line of defense against the EAB invasion. Koenig, from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, told 10,000 Birds.

As the rice paddies near Kota Kinabalu described in an earlier post , Tanjung Aru beach is not really a major birding spot in its own right. However, it is only a short taxi ride away from the airport where most travelers will arrive at – better to see birds instead of just eating fast food while waiting for a connecting flight.

Baby birds are cuteness personified, possibly even more so than other baby animals, including human babies, and pose interesting questions of survival and development. Sukau birding essentially means staying in a more-or-less comfortable lodge on the banks of the Kinatabagan river, and taking boat tours on more-or-less rickety boats on the river. So, just photos of the birds themselves. Why that makes Mr. Graydon worthy of having a bird species named after him is a mystery to me.

Most of the books about extinction, including Fuller’s Extinct Birds (now, ironically, out of print), describe what was lost and look for explanations, scientifically and historically. But it examines extinction in a very different way.

Promotional flyers and signs often show animals and birds that do not exist here on the Baja. This bird is now starting to obtain Unicorn status, I just can’t seem to track them down. On last Saturdays trip, we ran across one of the many signs within the Biosphere, that list the unique bird, animal or plant of that area.

In the e-era now, print magazines are going the way of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker. This year, the one now coming to a close, has been “The Year of the Bird,” as declared by National Geographic (as well as the National Audubon Society, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and BirdLife International). A: nothing.
