When I first visited New Zealand, back in 2000, the Stichbird was just a rare species of honeyeater (Meliphagidae), one of three representatives of that Australian family to be found here. On our recent trip to Kununurra on the Western Australia/Northern Territory border we camped right next to the Hidden Valley National Park , because you are not allowed to camp in the park itself. This was a species we were hoping for in the park-a White-quilled Rock-Pigeon!

The trip was to visit a handful of sites across North Sydney, which was great for me as they were places I could stand to know better and were close to where my family live (and I was staying). Another nice find by the assembled birders was a Bar-shouldered Dove , a species I had only seen in Queensland before this point.

So I thought I could give fair warning about one of the more dangerous birds out there, even more dangerous than the Lesser Goldfinch , and one of the more common and familiar birds of Australia and New Zealand, the Australian Magpie. Australian Magpies, like every other animal in Australia, are also dangerous. Dum dum DUM!

As we wandered along the trail we soon encountered family groups of both White-winged Fairywrens and Variegated Fairywrens. There was evidence of the mussels that would be a source of food for many species in the receding water line. Orange Chat. There were also Australian Pratincoles on the dry scrub around the middle of the day.

After spending Christmas Day birding around Broome and observing 92 species we spent the week making a mental note of what bird species were where. We managed to not observe Straw-necked Ibis or Glossy Ibis all day, but had seen both species a week ago! This is exactly why birding is such an interesting pastime.

With an obvious hint of disapproval, the HBW remarks that for this species, the “nest [is] a small or bulky but always untidy pad” I suspect the author of these lines lives with teenage children and uses the description of the magpie-robin to vent some frustration with them. But it is all for science, I hear them say.
