The Brown Pelican and the Peruvian Pelican are closely related and once were considered the same species. Both pelicans have a very specialized foraging strategy that depends on abundant fish near the surface. They dive-plunge to scoop-in fish in schools with its long bill and expandable throat pouch.

One strange thing about Chongming is the inevitable presence of people fishing. Not professionally – these people come in SUVs and probably never recapture their gas money from the fish they catch (though come to think of it, neither do I with my bird photos). of catching extremely small fish.

This year it was an American Crow ( Corvus brachyrhyncus ), though at home in Albany, New York, it’s just as likely to be – and has been in the past – a Fish Crow ( Corvus ossifragus ). I generally wait until I have at least a dozen species on my year list before having my first drink of the year. It’s all very inevitable, really.

Set in an abandoned oil refinery where wildlife is slowly regaining control save for the desperate attempts of golfers to retain all eighteen holes, industrial ghosts loom over rolling freshwater lakes bordered by fifty foot tall trees. About one hundred yards away an Anhinga surfaced with a freshly skewered fish. Crested Oropendola.

Tragically, I never saw any birds near the nest later on – I guess they abandoned it, decided to quit procreating, or just got eaten by some other bird or cat. Some of the more conservative Light-vented Bulbuls in my compound were trying to make the wearing of a tie mandatory for the species. The male at work.

Decades of land transformation and hydrological changes resulted in the decline of the only species of apple snail native to Florida and the kite population followed suit. While the native apple snail continued declining, another species of apple snail native to South America began to appear in canals and ponds in South Florida.
