Now, I am holding the 5th edition (2020) in my hands – what has changed in the meantime, especially in the 9 years since the 4th edition? Beside the paperback, the Sasol app has also been updated in 2020 and is a massive improvement on the previous edition. In the upper right corner of every species entry is a pencil.

But in 2020 I personally saw thousands of Waxwings in a dozen or so sites, and every one of my birder friends across the country had a similar experience. Other than that, there are exactly three eBird registries for the highlands of my state, and points north, before 2020 — two that I trust completely, and one which I doubt.

I photographed the Black-tailed Godwit in my photograph ( above ) on 18 September 2020. With its striking combination of colour rings I suspected that it would be easy to find out more about this particular bird, and I was right. In the summer of 2020 it was back at Brancaster Staithe again, with the first record on 23 July.
