Although there are not huge numbers of ducks in the area at the moment they will be very spread out now the land is flooded. There can actually be too much water for ducks! Pacific Black Ducks. Hopefully they will consider breeding in the area like they did in 2017 when the land was also flooded for an extended period of time.

There are several funding sources for the MBCF, but two predominate: (1) Duck Stamp sales, and (2) import duties on arms and ammunition. Now, I secretly do suspect that many millions of ducks may spend the winter in my own backyard. But I did both.

And then at the 2017 launch in Austria there were to be heard Ooooh’s! As soon as I drove up the levee which overlooked the marshes on the other side I spotted many cormorants, ducks and egrets and also a couple of Eurasian Spoonbills ( Platalea leucorodia ) , which foraged by sweeping with their bills. and Aaaah’s!

It really can be too wet for ducks! It is highly likely that the Glossy Ibis will have a significant breeding colony close by, not dissimilar to 2017. Despite so much water there were a few Pacific Black Ducks , Grey Teal , Hardheads , Wandering Whistling-Ducks , Australasian Grebes and Eurasian Coots.

I remember well my indignation in early 2017, when whoever controls the east-west flow of water had allowed the west side to dry up while maintaining the east side at full depth. The normally-shallower west side attracts all sorts of ducks and shorebirds; the east side usually offers only American Coots and Clark’s Grebes.)

None of those cold-weather waterfowl turned up while I was freezing my face off, but a hundred or so Long-tailed Ducks made the trip worthwhile.

A late Nashville Warbler , an Orange-crowned Warbler , and a bunch of dabbling ducks were some of his top species. Some lakewatching at the Irondequot Bay Outlet was rewarded by my FOY Purple Sandpiper , a rather brown bird feeding on the rocks of the jetty. Corey saw some decent birds this weekend but nothing that really astounded.

The wicked waves drove Long-tailed Ducks into the calm of the inlet and most other seaducks away from shore. For many, the third weekend of November serves as the last moment of true relaxation of the calendar year. Hopefully, we all made the most of it! I ran up to Lake Ontario on Sunday despite some major northwestern winds.

His explorations netted him several species that are lingering longer than usual, like Glossy Ibis , Lesser Yellowlegs , and Snowy Egret , a rare duck in a drake Eurasian Wigeon , and, best of all, his first Hudsonian Godwit of the year.

The numbers of Magpie Geese were not only significant due to the high rainfall at the start of 2017, but the Magpie Geese bred around the area and there was a population boost over the following months. The Magpie Geese stand around on the edge of the water and swim in the shallows.

This was our first for 2017 and not surprising that it was alone, because they often are. Yellow-billed Spoonbill and Pink-eared Ducks. The Australian Shelducks were the dominant duck and several pairs lined the edges of the lake and other ducks included Pink-eared Ducks and Grey Teal. Lone male Musk Duck.

Pintail Duck was another sneaky bird! There was a duck upside down at Freiston Shore and its tail feathers were not the same as the others! Finally it turned itself the right way up and was a Pintail Duck ! The same experience was to be had at Rutland Water, so watch out for the sneaky upside down ducks! Pintail Duck.

The Semipalmated Plover gets an honourable mention on the display boards at the hut, but sadly it has not been observed back in Broome since it left on migration around April 2017. Plumed Whistling Ducks and Wandering Whistling Ducks have been nesting in these wet areas and our first pair of Green Pygmy-geese for 2017 were floating around on the track! Pink-eared Ducks returned to the area and we observed a pair of Baillon’s Crake swimming around beside the highway.

The birding has been rewarding as always and we have been able to add several birds to the 2017 year list that we may not see around Broome every year. The water was warm and the ducks floated off as I approached! Ephemeral lakes have had some Water Lilies this year, which have been absent when they have not filled up in other years.

My first California Quail in California, at Point Reyes National Seashore in October 2017. I saw my first in Utah back in 2010 right around the time I first started birding but didn’t see one in California proper until a visit to Point Reyes National Seashore in October of last year.
