The two most prolific contributors, Pat and Tom, have been sharing their birding space in Costa Rica. The beats have now contributed more checklists than birds. During October, 7 countries (Costa Rica, Australia, USA, India, Hong Kong, UK, Serbia) were birded by 11 beats who shared 135 checklists and noted 697 species.

Most serious bird photographers dislike taking pictures of birds wearing rings (or what on the other side of the Atlantic you call bands). I can sympathise, as a shiny new ring, clamped to a bird’s leg, rarely enhances its portrait. The information I received didn’t indicate the age of the bird.

We have continued to observe the birds along the edge and on the Great Northern Highway to the south of Broome across Roebuck Plains. The depth of water over the highway varies daily and the bird-life varies too. There is not a lot of traffic at any time, so you are able to pull to the edge of the bitumen and stop to watch the birds.

Thankfully due to the long life span of this bird species the population appears to be somewhat stable at the moment. The last successful breeding year was in 2016 when the eggs were laid a little earlier than the usual July 1st and one chick did survive to join other Pied Oystercatchers in a non-breeding flock for a few years.

Should I add, in this green oasis 152 bird species were recorded in the last three and a half years and that the two local White-tailed Eagle pairs are still loyal to their nesting territories. Only the future of that picture worries me.

Within 140 ac / 60 ha of Rancho Naturalista’s Reserve, there are 500 bird species – or 55% of the nation’s total!
