Ron Pittaway has published his winter finch forecast for the winter of 2013-2014. Red Crossbills comprise at least 10 “types” in North America. Interestingly, I found a Blue Jay feather stuck on a hazelnut north of Toronto on 11 August 2013. Each type probably represents a separate or recently evolving species.

Descriptions are totally rewritten from the 2003 regional guides, and though they are essentially the same material as the 2013 main guide, the text has been re-arranged to emphasize important points in less space.

There were similar FWS studies using similar methodologies with similar findings in 2003 , 2007 , and 2013. However, at least one source reported that way back in 2002, there were approximately 700,000 copies in print of the Sibley Guide to Birds and 250,000 of Kenn Kaufman’s Field Guide to Birds of North America.

12–13 Duck Billed Dinosaurs, a common type of dinosaur in North America prior to the Great Extintion Event at about 65 million years ago, seem to have had a comb, like a Rooster’s. This was reported in Current Biology and the report is summarized here.

Greenland was also ruled out as a source where David Bortemann in communication with biolgists working around Greenland reported normal or low numbers of Snowy Owls during the summer of 2013. In the end several sources pointed to Northern Quebec as having a big lemming year and a boom year for Snowy Owls.

Though the Large-billed Tern is a bird of freshwater rivers, lakes, and marshes of South America it does wander to North America on very rare occasions.
